B1S3 - Listening 2

Harry: Hi, Lauren! What are you reading?

Lauren: Hello! It’s a news article about the Sydney Opera House. The government is closing it for remodeling.

Harry: Really? How much time is it going to be closed? It’s a beautiful building.

Lauren: They say that for at least two years. This never happened before.

Harry: I remember that our Arts teacher told us that it opened on October 20th, 1973. And it took almost 19 years to finish.

Lauren: Do you know how many people visit it annually?

Harry: No, I don’t. But I know that there is space for 5,532 people.

Lauren: Yes, it has five different halls or theaters, and there are around 4.5 million visits per year.

Harry: That’s a lot of people visiting the Opera House not only for a music show, but also to get a guided tour.

Lauren: Yes, there are a lot of people interested in its architecture. Its expressionist style and the structure over the water make it an extraordinary construction.

Harry: Yes, I agree with you, the 67 meters high roof simulating a sailing ship is incredible. The UNESCO declared it world heritage in 2007.

Lauren: Yes, but for now we must wait to visit it. How many events does it have annually?

Harry: I read that about 2,400 events. A lot of artists need to look for another place to perform.

Lauren: I know, let’s hope they don’t take more than two years.

Harry: You’re right! Well, Lauren I have to go, my piano lessons are about to start.

Lauren: Okay, see you later!
