B5S3 - Listening 1

Wendy: Hello, Andrew! How are you?

Andrew: Hi, Wendy! I’m fine, and you? What are you reading?

Wendy: It’s a news article about the events that had a great impact in the world in the recent past.

Andrew: Do you remember when Paris was attacked by terrorists in 2015? One hundred and thirty people were killed that night.

Wendy: Yes, it’s mentioned in the article as well as the riots in England in 2011. Did you hear about them?

Andrew: Yeah, my father was on a business trip in London, and he said that rioters had set fire to vehicles and stores.

Wendy: That was terrible. But not everything here is bad news. For example, the re-election of Barack Obama as President of the United States in 2012.

Andrew: I read that it was an important re-election because it meant the US voters felt comfortable to keep the first African- American president in the White House for a second term.

Wendy: I’m sure that it’s considered as one of the most important news stories people have heard because it had a great impact around the world. Another shocking event was when the 33 Chilean miners were rescued after 69 days trapped in a copper mine.

Andrew: Of course! Reporters from all over the world were broadcasting live every day while they were trapped until they were rescued.

Wendy: The Chilean miners’ rescue is definitely good news. Do you want to check more news with me on the Internet?

Andrew: Sure! Let’s go get my phone and see what we can find.

Wendy: Okay, let’s go.
