B4S4 - Listening 2

Amelia: Hi, Owen! What are you watching on TV?

Owen: It’s a documentary. They are talking about the Civil Rights Movement.

Amelia: My grandfather always talks about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he participated and led marches for the African-American people’s right to vote, desegregation, and other civil rights.

Owen: Yes, as a reverend, he was a peaceful activist. However, a lot of people disliked what he was doing.

Amelia: Really? What happened to him?

Owen: He was shot in Memphis, Tennessee, and then died a few hours later. It was on April 4th, 1968.

Amelia: That was terrible for someone who only wanted to help others.

Owen: I think it was, too. Unfortunately, there were a lot of political interests involved, and he always said that whatever happened to him, he would always fight for his people’s rights.

Amelia: He won a Nobel Prize, didn’t he?

Owen: Yes, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was loved and supported by many people, and more than 300,000 citizens attended his funeral.

Amelia: Whoever reads about his life will know that he made a huge step to end segregation. Nobody should be treated differently.

Owen: Absolutely. In fact, my grandma has a drama movie about the early years of Martin Luther King. Would you like to come with me and watch it?

Amelia: Sure! Let’s visit her this weekend.

Owen: Of course, I’ll call her tonight. See you then!
